Architects complete stunning timber school refectory in south-west London

EDGE

UK architects and urbanists Maccreanor Lavington have completed this incredible competition-winning dining hall timber structure for pupils at Ibstock Place School in Roehampton, west London.

The building makes abundant use of timber. The striking glue-laminated (glulam) lattice structure of the vaulted ceilings frame inset panels of oak, designed to incorporate acoustic absorption to soften the background noise of dining in what is regarded as the communal heart of the school.

The aim was to create a building with a timeless quality - an uplifting environment for the students to gather and dine in.

The refectory design responds to a recognition of the importance of school lunchtimes in supporting the emotional and social development of pupils.

As well as the use of natural materials and presence of abundant daylight, both of which are shown to enhance wellbeing, the design incorporates glazed doors enabling views and access to the surrounding garden in order to connect pupils to nature.

Another aesthetically stunning example of timber panelling and furnishings bringing nature indoors and creating a calm atmosphere and environment that is comfortable and enjoyable to be in.

The natural character and specific form of our own 3D Wall Panels also improves the acoustic properties and microclimate of interiors.

Combine these panels with our exemplary range of made-to-order wood furniture and we can really help you create healthier environments that bring the outdoors in and naturally benefit our wellbeing.
